Motion-based lighting in Jonava
Motion-based lighting in Jonava shows how smart infrastructure can improve safety, boost efficiency, and support sustainable urban living.
Location:
Jonava, Lithuania
Hardware:
- LIGHTWAVE luminaire controllers
- LIGHTWAVE-LTE luminaire controllers
- LUMAWISE Motion sensors
Software:
HORIZON urban lighting management platform
The challenge
In line with Jonava’s growing investment in smart infrastructure, a residential zone required improved nighttime lighting. Specifically, lighting that could improve public safety, reduce energy consumption, and minimize light pollution.
However, conventional lighting setups would have kept luminaires on at an intensive level of brightness throughout the periods of darkness, regardless of real usage patterns. For a calm residential area with sporadic foot or bicycle traffic, this would have meant:
- Wasted energy
- Unnecessary strain on the lighting infrastructure.
The solution: motion-based lighting in Jonava
To address these challenges, Jonava deployed a smart lighting ecosystem. The city combined luminaire controllers with motion sensors, all integrated into the HORIZON urban lighting management platform.
This setup enabled true adaptive lighting:
- Dimming lights when no one is around
- Instantly increasing brightness when movement is detected
- And then following that movement regardless of its speed or direction.
The system ensures targeted illumination based on real-time behavior, while remaining easily monitored from one platform for ease of management.
Results & benefits
- Adaptive lighting in real time
The lighting automatically responds to motion, providing full brightness when needed and dimming when the area is unoccupied, thus ensuring comfort and energy savings without compromise. - Energy efficiency and longevity
Reduced energy use and less frequent full-power operation help extend the lifetime of the luminaires while supporting Jonava’s environmental goals. - One-tap control (centralized management)
Through HORIZON, the city can now monitor and control their lighting infrastructure remotely, including diagnostics, scheduling, and live performance data. - Increased residential comfort and safety
Smart illumination improves visibility for pedestrians and cyclists while reducing over-lighting and supporting a more peaceful night environment for residents. - Scalable smart infrastructure
This installation is part of a growing smart lighting network across Jonava, offering a blueprint for future upgrades throughout the city.
Looking ahead
This project reflects Jonava’s ongoing commitment to combining public safety, sustainability, and efficiency through smart technologies. By moving away from static lighting toward behavior-responsive solutions, the city is building a future-ready infrastructure that puts both people and the environment first.
